Beijiang Dike
Beijiang dike is located on the left bank of the lower reaches of Beijiang River. It is an important barrier for Guangzhou to prevent the flood of Xijiang River and Beijiang River. It is a national first-class dike. The protection population of the dike area is more than 20 million, the cultivated land is more than 1 million Hm2, and the GDP is more than 300 billion yuan. The dike starts from qibeiling on the left bank of Dayan River, a tributary of Beijiang River, passes through Shijiao town of Qingyuan City at the mouth of Dayan River, goes down along the left bank of Beijiang River, passes through Lubao town of Sanshui City, southwest town of Sanshui City, and ends at Shishan of Nanhai City, with a total length of 63.34km. In order to reduce the pressure of flood on the Beijiang Levee and control the flow into Guangzhou, two flood diversion gates, Lubao and southwest, are set up on the levee, and two flood diversion channels, lubaoyong and xinanyong, are connected below the levee. The Dadi protection area is a flood area in history. Except for a small number of hills and platforms, most of the ground elevation is 3m-7m (base level of the Pearl River), which is often below the flood water level of Beijiang River and Xijiang River.
Beijiang Levee is the top priority of flood control in Guangdong. Guangzhou, Foshan and Qingyuan, as well as Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Beijing Guangzhou railway, Beijing Zhuhai Expressway and other important traffic facilities are within the protection scope of Beijiang Levee. Therefore, Beijiang Levee is also known as “economic dike” and “life dike” of Guangdong.
According to Huang Baiqing, director of the water resources department of Guangdong Province, the Beijiang Levee Reinforcement Project is a key water conservancy construction project of the Ministry of water resources and the Tenth Five Year Plan of Guangdong Province, which started construction in 2001. The project has completed the heightening and thickening of 63.346km of Beijiang Levee, as well as dike foundation treatment, bank reinforcement and revetment, and reconstruction of dike crossing structures. At the same time, 213 km of “two streams and one river” around Beijiang River has been renovated.
Huang Huahua, governor of Guangdong Province, said that although the Beijiang Levee Reinforcement Project and the “two streams and one river regulation” project have been successfully completed, the flood control situation is not optimistic. Large basin floods are likely to occur in Guangdong Province, especially in small and medium-sized basins, leading to local serious flood disasters. Beijiang Levee is one of the seven embankments that must be protected in China. Once there is a big problem in Beijiang Levee, the loss will be immeasurable. Therefore, Beijiang flood control still needs to take precautions to ensure the safety of Beijiang Levee in flood season.
